SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles

Bold. Playful. Unconventional.

SNAFU Society of Unexpected Spectacles is a Canadian physical theatre and puppet company based in Victoria, BC. Led by artists Ingrid Hansen and Kathleen Greenfield, SNAFU has created over forty original performances since 2006 — from large-scale outdoor productions to intimate puppet shows that tour across Canada and abroad.

Their previous website, built on Weebly, no longer reflected the company’s creative range or professional scope. After years of touring and growth, SNAFU needed a dynamic new Squarespace website that could showcase current and past shows, highlight upcoming tours, and engage audiences through ticketing and donations — all while maintaining a bold, distinctive identity.

The redesign focused on creating a vibrant, easy-to-navigate platform that celebrates SNAFU’s ongoing work while serving as a living archive of past and in-progress shows.

The Approach

This project involved a complete redesign from Weebly to Squarespace, focusing on clarity, storytelling, and visual impact while maintaining SNAFU’s trademark sense of humor and play.

  • Content & Structure
I restructured the site to feature distinct sections for current shows, touring productions, and past creations — allowing visitors, presenters, and collaborators to easily navigate SNAFU’s extensive body of work. The About and Donate pages were reimagined to balance storytelling and professionalism, emphasizing the company’s nonprofit status and community involvement.

  • Visual & Interactive Design
To reflect SNAFU’s theatrical identity, I implemented custom section dividers, image frames, and playful hover animations inspired by their performances. The site incorporates custom toggles for long artist bios, interactive tabs for easy navigation through dense content, and video embeds with animated play buttons and custom borders for consistency and impact.

  • Technical & Functional Enhancements

The new website includes a ticketing widget, show filters for dynamic browsing, and responsive custom layouts that adapt seamlessly across devices. Every design element was refined through advanced CSS to balance accessibility with aesthetic detail.

Features & Highlights

  • Custom Typography & Styling — expressive fonts customized to reflect SNAFU’s theatrical voice, balancing bold headlines with legible, energetic body text.

  • Custom CSS styling and animations — dynamic elements enhance playfulness without compromising clarity.

  • Advanced section dividers and image frames — visual continuity inspired by SNAFU’s stage design.

  • Integrated ticketing system — fully customized widget for effortless ticket access.

  • Tabbed About section — intuitive navigation for dense biographies and company information.

  • Custom toggles and collapsible text blocks — ideal for long-form content and artist bios.

  • Video frames with animated play buttons — consistent visual branding for multimedia sections.

  • Show filtering system — allows users to browse current, past, and touring shows intuitively.

The Result

SNAFU’s new website captures the company’s inventive, collaborative energy while remaining simple to manage and update. The design balances bold creative expression with clear organization, giving the team full control to add new shows, tours, or media as their repertoire grows. Built with custom styling and thoughtful structure, the site now mirrors SNAFU’s spirit — playful and delightfully human — while staying intuitive behind the scenes.
