Why Squarespace Is the Best Website Builder for Artists

Whether you're a painter, photographer, illustrator, or mixed-media artist, your website should feel like an extension of your studio. It’s where your work lives, where your story unfolds, and where people can experience the depth of your creative voice.

Choosing the right platform matters. For most of the 130+ artists I’ve supported — from emerging voices to established names in visual arts, performance, and literature — Squarespace stands out as the best website builder for showcasing creative work with clarity, beauty, and ease.

As a designer with a background in the arts, I’ve found that Squarespace offers a rare combination of structure and sensitivity. It allows us to shape digital spaces that are not only functional, but reflective of each artist’s rhythm, language, and evolution.

A visual platform that honors creativity, built to grow with your art

Why artists love Squarespace

Because it feels like a natural extension of your creative world.

A visually curated aesthetic

Squarespace templates are built for visual storytelling. Clean, minimal, and flexible — they give your work space to breathe. Whether you're showcasing a single series or a layered body of work, the layout supports clarity and rhythm. Full-bleed images, project-based galleries, and elegant typography result in a portfolio that feels curated and intentional.

Ready to grow with you

Your artistic practice evolves—and your website should be able to evolve with it. Squarespace makes it easy to start small and build over time: from a single page to a full portfolio, shop, blog, courses, or press archive as things unfold. Everything stays cohesive, without requiring a full redesign down the line. Several of my clients have expanded their websites gradually—adding sections as their careers grew and opportunities unfolded.
Your artistic practice evolves — and your website should evolve with it.

Easy to use, Minimal Tech Stress

Most of the artists I work with don’t identify as tech-savvy — and that’s totally fine. Squarespace was designed to be intuitive and artist-friendly. With a clean interface and flexible editing tools, even hesitant users learn to update galleries, add bios, and share new work with confidence.

Feels Like an Extension of Your Practice

From content to structure, your website becomes part of your artistic ecosystem. It can house your portfolio, process, events, and offerings — all within a cohesive, expressive framework that reflects who you are and how you work.

What makes Squarespace the best choice for artists?

Because it balances artistry with reliable, scalable structure.

While Squarespace is often praised for its elegance, it’s also an incredibly practical tool for working artists. Behind the scenes, it offers everything needed to build a strong, professional online presence — without technical overwhelm.

Built-In SEO Tools That Work

From clean URLs to image alt-text and metadata prompts, Squarespace makes it easier to optimize your content. This matters when applying for grants, sharing your portfolio with curators, or aiming to increase your visibility online. Many artists are surprised at how approachable SEO can be with a little guidance.

Integrated E-commerce, Thoughtfully Designed

Whether you’re selling original artwork, prints, zines, or digital downloads, Squarespace’s e-commerce features are built in. Shops can be as simple or as curated as your work requires, and I often help clients design online stores that feel like seamless extensions of their portfolio.

Built-In Marketing Tools

Squarespace includes integrated tools like email campaigns, newsletter sign-ups, announcement bars, and pop-ups — all natively connected to your site. When set up intentionally, they allow you to share your updates, connect with collectors, and promote new work — without switching platforms or managing add-ons.

Mobile-Optimized

Every Squarespace template is responsive, so your work looks great on any device — an essential feature when your audience includes curators, galleries, or collaborators who may view your site on the go.

Security, Support, and Scalability

Hosting, SSL certificates, automatic updates, and 24/7 support are included. You don’t need to worry about maintenance, back-end stress, or broken features.

Squarespace provides the foundation — but thoughtful design turns that foundation into something personal, functional, and aligned with your artistic growth.

Why work with a Squarespace web designer who specializes in artists?

Because a website built for artists should reflect more than just your work — it should reflect your voice, your rhythm, and your vision.

While Squarespace offers beautiful templates and a user-friendly interface, many artists still feel overwhelmed by layout choices, unsure how to present their portfolio, or uncertain about what to include. That’s where working with someone who understands both the platform and the artistic process makes all the difference.

Creative Translation, Not Just Design
I take time to understand your work, values, and visual rhythm so your website becomes a natural extension of your artistic practice — not just a portfolio, but a space that feels lived in and intentional.

Strategic & Emotional Clarity
Together, we define how to frame your work and story — from structure and copy to page flow and tone. I help you highlight what matters most, so curators, collectors, and collaborators can immediately connect with your vision.

Tailored Structure & Refined Aesthetics
Every layout is shaped around your content — often with light CSS and advanced styling to ensure your site feels balanced, thoughtful, and cohesive. It's about more than “good design” — it's about aligning form and function to your unique rhythm.

Guided, Stress-Free Process
From content planning to post-launch support, I guide you through a step-by-step process designed to be supportive, clear, and efficient — with space for feedback and refinement along the way.

Multilingual & International Support
I build sites in English, French, and Spanish, and work with artists across Canada, France, and Spain. If your audience is multilingual or international, I’ll help you communicate with clarity and ease across borders and cultures.

More Than Just a Website

Many of my clients need more than a static showcase. I help artists integrate e-commerce, press pages, booking tools, or newsletter systems — without making the site feel transactional. Everything stays aligned with your artistic identity.

Thoughtful Additions, When Needed

From portfolio curation to SEO-friendly copy reviews, I provide guidance where it matters most. Some clients come with everything ready — others need help shaping their message. you will be supported either way.

Squarespace for artists — FAQs

  • It depends on your priorities. If your website is primarily a store with many products and advanced inventory needs, Shopify is a strong e-commerce platform—and I do offer Shopify design for select clients.
But most artists I work with need a website that tells their story and sells their work. In those cases, Squarespace offers the right balance of editorial design, ease of navigation, and integrated commerce—without feeling like a storefront-first experience.

  • I’ve tried Wix, and while it offers creative freedom, it often feels clunky and inconsistent. In my experience, Wix sites can appear less professional, and responsiveness across devices is unreliable. Squarespace offers better structure, visual balance, and long-term impact—especially for artists who care about how their work is experienced online.

  • Squarespace is a powerful platform, but templates alone don’t translate your identity. As a designer with a background in the arts, I bring strategic, visual, and emotional clarity to each project—shaping a website that feels aligned with your work. From structure and SEO to multilingual content and subtle customization, I guide you through a thoughtful process designed specifically for creative professionals.

Your website is a digital reflection of your voice, your work, and your path as an artist. Whether you're starting fresh or refining what you already have, Squarespace gives you the tools to build something lasting. And with the right design support, the process becomes intentional, expressive, and empowering.

If your current site feels fragmented — or if you've been putting one off entirely — I’d love to help you shape something that feels true to you.
